What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid, also known and called hyaluronan, is an anionic and gel-like molecule present in all joints, nerves and connecting tissues of all mammals. It acts as a hydrating agent on the skin, hair, and eyes of mammals. The human body contains approximately 15 grams of Hyaluronic Acid which is found in almost all parts of the body.  According to scientific research, there are numerous functions associated with Hyaluronic Acid some of which are its assistance in the improvement of skin hydration, its assistance in the production of skin collagen, its ability to work as an antioxidant, its ability to maintain skin elasticity, its ability to act as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity and lots more.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid to the Human Skin

There are lots of health benefits associated with hyaluronic acid. Research has it that it is a molecule that is partly made up of sugars, which naturally moisturizes the skin and aids in the proper functioning of the human body. One of the great health benefits of this acid lies in its ability to retain high quantities of moisture as compared to other natural or artificial polymer. Research has it that a gram of the hyaluronic acid can hold around six liters of water.

Hyaluronic acid also aids in repairing skin which has been damaged from sunburn, acne, rosacea, and other sources. Its lightweight texture does not act as a barrier for oily and sensitive skin.

Hyaluronic acid also acts as an anti-oxidizing agent as it provides antioxidant defense against free-radical damage. It aids in the reduction of inflammation. It improves skin moisture and strengthens the various skin layers thereby making the skin look softer, smoother and plumper.

How to Mix Hyaluronic Acid with Foundation

If you’ve already got a foundation that you like, you can add a few drops of hyaluronic acid to it to give it a “moisturizing boost”.

One of my favorite hyaluronic acid serums is the Cosmetica Skincare Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Here’s how to mix hyaluronic acid with foundation:

  1. Using a small makeup jar, add some liquid foundation into the jar.
  2. Add a few drops of hyalornic acid to the jar.Do not add too much as you want to maintain your foundation’s consistency.
  3. Mix the foundation and hyaluronic acid together. Use a thin wooden mixing stick here as the stick won’t absorb the product. Scrape off any product on the stick back into the makeup jar.
  4. Test the result on the back on your hand. If the consistency is not what you desired, add more foundation or hyaluronic acid to correct.

If you find that you need to use more hyaluronic acid, you can apply the serum to your face first and then apply the foundation on top. This is also recommended if you’re working with a powder foundation. It’s better to apply the serum on your face first and then apply the powder foundation on top. Adding serum and to your powder will clump it up which will mess up your coverage.
