7 Ways to Create a Glam Look For Dark Skin

by Sandy Taylor

Glamorous makeup looks for people with dark skin can be quite intimidating to create. Even women who have been doing makeup for years find elaborate and polished makeup quite tricky. There’s the fear of doing too much or going overboard, as well as the concern that the outcome will melt off and look like a cakey mess quickly.

If you need more sophisticated makeup for a special event, but you are not sure if your makeup chops are up to it, do not worry — help is here.

Provided below are seven tricks to create a glam look for dark skin that can make your casual daily makeup look ready for a fancy event. You do not need a whole set of new skills — just a few new and easy approaches or steps that can make a whole world of difference.

1. Switch to a Flawless Foundation

Instead of going for your usual BB or CC cream that offers a dewy and natural finish, opt for a foundation that creates the look of flawless skin and is long-lasting.

Go about your usual skin prep routine, which includes the application of primer, and then apply the foundation. Make sure to evenly spread a thin layer first and let it dry before going for a second layer. Doing this will achieve full coverage even if you do not bother with color correction or concealer.

2. Use a Skin Brightener

Flawless foundation tends to make your face look flat; so, to restore dimension, use a skin brightener. This is not a concealer; rather, it is a thin and blend-able formula that adds just a bit of coverage plus remarkable brightness under the eyes, the bridge of the nose, chin, cupid’s bow, and forehead.

Applying skin brightener will make your features pop. You don’t even have to use a highlighter for your makeup up look if you’re not a fan of the shimmer.

3. Set Your Base with Powder and a Puff

It does not matter what kind of finely-milled setting powder you use, but be sure to apply it with a soft powder puff instead of a makeup sponge. The puff makes all the difference. Even if you have textured skin, the puff manages to achieve the look of evenness because you can press the powder into your skin with it.

When you set your base, focus more under the eyes, your smile lines, and around your nose.

4. Restore Healthy Glow by Lightly Sweeping Bronzer All Over Your Face.

The bronzer will bring warmth back to your face, and if you use a big and fluffy brush for application, you will also be able to get rid of the extra setting powder on your skin. Just use a small amount of bronzer; you are not contouring yet, after all.

Make this small amount go a long way by swirling the brush lightly across your face and down your neck. If you bronze your skin this way, you will achieve a subtle warm glow instead of an orange-y tint to your skin.

5. Contour Ever So Lightly

For a more sculpted appearance — which is a major component of glam makeup looks — define your cheeks, mouth, jawline, nose, and forehead line with contour powder. Again, use a fluffy brush to do so, especially if you are a makeup newbie. A fluffy brush is more forgiving, and it makes blending easier.

If you are new at contouring, the rule to follow is to place the contour along the hollows of your face and brush upwards to feather out. This trick creates a lifted and more youthful appearance.

To have a more elegant neck area, bring the contour down your neck in a V-shape and apply a bit of highlight to your clavicle. This is perfect if you will be wearing an outfit with an exposed neckline.

6. Define Your Brows with Concealer

There’s no better way to make your eyebrows pop than to define their shape with concealer after doing them. When you are done with the brow pencil and brow gel, clean up over and under the brows by applying concealer with a small brush.

Doing this will create a more polished look for your brows, and it will also highlight your brow bone, which you want, especially if you have smokey eye makeup.

7. Thicken your Eyeliner

Most glam looks today are not complete without a thick and extended eye line. There is nothing much to this other than laying your liquid or gel liner heavier and longer. This takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of this trick, creating a dramatic makeup look will be a breeze.

When you thicken your eyeliner, make sure that you stay as close to your lash line as possible, especially if you do not want to wear falsies.
