5 Minute Mascara Hacks and Tips For Beginners

by Sandy Taylor

Using mascara is one of the best ways to make your eyes pop! There are hacks and tricks within the makeup industry that artists use to create those stunning looks.

In this post I will share the best mascara hacks and tips that take only 5 minutes to do and that are easy enough to learn even if you are a beginner.

How to Make Colored Mascara Show on Dark Lashes

The best way to make colored mascara show on dark lashes is to use a white base or primer. A DIY mixture of white eyeshadow, water and pea-sized amount of face primer can also be used if you don’t have a white base or primer.

Here’s What You Need to Do:

  1. After curling your lashes (if necessary), apply a coat of white lash primer. Continue this process until lashes appear completely white. Allow the primer to dry a bit in between coats for added volume.
  2. If you don’t have a lash primer, white eyeshadow will work too! take a clean knife and scrape a bit of pigment off the top of your eyeshadow pan. Mix the loose pigment with a couple of drops of water and a pea-sized amount of face or eyeshadow primer. Add more pigment if the paste does not appear to be opaque. After mixing, apply the paste to your lashes with a clean spooly brush.
  3. Once your primed eyelashes have dried completely, apply the colored mascara of your choice! If you really want to make the color pop, apply a white or contrasting eyeshadow color all over the lid.

How to Make Mascara Waterproof with Hairspray

The easiest way to make any mascara waterproof is by adding hairspray to it. The silicone-based ingredient dimethicone copolyol in hairspray gives mascara a weightless quality that will keep the shape you make with your eyelash curler.  Here are 2 application methods:

Method 1 – Spray (Mist) On Lashes

Many makeup artists swear by this method. It is not recommended to do this by yourself, so make sure to ask a friend for help.

  1. Close your eyes tightly and have a friend spray your lashes while holding the can about 12 inches from your face. One quick spray should be enough to coat both of your lashes.
  2. Allow a few minutes for the hairspray to dry. You should feel that that your lashes are holding up a lot better. Repeat step 1 if you feel you need them to be stronger.

Method 2 – Saturate the Mascara Brush

If you have sensitive skin or eyes, this next method may be a good alternative. Take a clean spooly or flat eyeshadow brush and apply hairspray to the brush until it appears wet. Once fully saturated, apply hairspray to lashes with the brush.

How to Make Brown Mascara Black

A lot of us enjoy the subtlety of brown mascara, but it’s always fun to switch things up from time to time. Brown mascara can easily be made darker with eyeshadow.

Here’s What You Need to Do:

  1. Take a pan of black eyeshadow pigment and scrape a bit off of the top. Mix a couple of drops of water with the pigment to make a paste-like substance. This step will help you avoid any fallout.
  2. Apply a layer of your brown mascara, then take a clean spooly and apply the black pigment mixture you created. Let your lashes dry and repeat this step for added volume.

How to Make Colored Mascara with Eyeshadow

Colored mascara has become more popular in recent years, but there are still more eyeshadow colors available than mascara colors. If you are having trouble finding the shade you want, eyeshadow is a great tool for making the perfect colored mascara.

Besides eyeshadow, you will either need a clear or a white mascara primer. Primers work similarly to mascara, but they are not as dark. Clear mascara will give you a more subtle color, while white will make the color appear more vibrant.

Here’s What You Need to Do:

  1. Apply a layer of primer to your lashes, and before it dries, pat the eyeshadow color of your choice onto your lashes with a flat makeup brush. It is recommended that you do this before applying your base as it may cause fallout onto your cheeks.
  2. If you would prefer to do your base first, you can hold a tissue under your bottom lash line to catch any extra pigment.

How to Make Mascara Less Runny

Mascara smudges are the worst, and those of us with oily skin often struggle with runny mascara on a daily basis. There are a few different methods for fighting this struggle.

The best way to make mascara less runny is to use a mascara primer as it helps to thicken consistency of your mascara and help it bond to your lashes.

Here’s What You Need to Do:

  1. Apply a thin later of clear mascara primer on your lashes. Make sure to focus the primer at the base of your lashes as well. The oil glands in your skin break down the mascara first near the root of your lash.
  2. Allow the primer to dry completely before you apply mascara.

Loose Setting Powder Can Make Mascara Less Runny

Another, more unconventional hack involves loose setting powder.

Here’s What You Need to Do:

  1. Take the powder on a fluffy eyeshadow brush and dust it all over your upper and lower lid and coat your eyelashes as well. This will reduce the oil production around your eyes and prevent the mascara from breaking down. The powder on your lashes also acts as a nice base for the mascara to grip onto.
  2. Throughout the day, take an oil blotting sheet to the underside and outer corner of your eyes to soak up any extra oil that soaked through the powder. These steps will also help keep your eyeliner from running!
